A clear question is half the answer
One of the first things people ask me is: "But what am I actually allowed to ask?" The lovely thing about horary astrology is that you can bring almost any concrete matter to it — from a lost bunch of keys to an upcoming house move. Even so, not every question is equally suited to this technique. In this article I explain in practical terms what makes a good horary question, give a few examples per theme, and tell you which questions are better asked elsewhere.
What makes a question suitable?
A strong horary question shares a few traits. It is concrete: it concerns a recognisable situation, not a vague feeling. It is clearly bounded: it has a clear beginning and end, and a recognisable answer is possible. It is sincere: you genuinely want to know the answer, and it matters in your life right now. And it deals with one issue at a time, not three questions rolled into one.
The rule of thumb is simple: the clearer the question, the clearer the answer. "Will I get the job I'm interviewing for next week?" yields a far sharper answer than "How is my career going to go?". A good question is like a well-aimed light: it illuminates exactly the corner where you want to see more.
What a question does not need to be is complicated or solemnly worded. You don't have to use astrological terms and you don't have to make your question "pretty". Just ask it the way it comes to you, in your own words — it's exactly that spontaneous, genuine question that works best. Many people find that writing their question down already helps them clarify what it is they really want to know.
Example questions per theme
Below I run through the themes people most often come to me with, each with a few example questions. Feel free to use them as inspiration to sharpen your own question. Notice how they all share the same pattern: they concern one concrete situation, with a recognisable answer in sight. That is exactly what makes horary astrology so practical — you don't need to supply any birth data, only a question that genuinely matters to you right now.
Work & career
For decisions around work, horary astrology is especially popular, because you are often standing at a concrete crossroads.
"Will I get the job I applied for?" · "Is this the right moment to hand in my notice?" · "Is it worth asking my employer for a raise?"
Housing & property
Buying or selling a home is often nerve-wracking and costly — exactly when a clear answer helps.
"Will this be the house I end up buying?" · "Will I sell my home within a reasonable time?" · "Is this neighbourhood a good choice for me?"
Love & relationships
Relationship questions lend themselves very well to horary astrology, as long as you keep them concrete.
"Does this relationship have a future?" · "Will we grow closer again?" · "Is he or she sincere with me?"
Pets
You can also come to me about our animals — and this is one of the themes where horary astrology can be surprisingly comforting.
"Will my runaway cat come back?" · "Will my dog get well again?"
Lost objects
A classic within question astrology: something lost and no idea where to look.
"Will I find my lost ring again?" · "Where should I search for my mislaid documents?"
Sport
Facing a match, a selection or a sporting dilemma? A focused question can bring clarity.
"Will I win this coming Sunday's match?" · "Will I recover from my injury in time?"
Travel & holidays
For travel plans and doubts around setting off, a clearly bounded question is ideal.
"Will this trip be a success?" · "Is it wise to book this holiday now?" · "Will my move abroad go smoothly?"
Purchases & partnerships
Before you make a major purchase or join forces with someone, a horary question can save you from a misstep.
"Is this second-hand car a good buy?" · "Does this partnership have a future?" · "Can I trust this business partner?"
Which questions are less suitable?
Some questions are simply too big for a single chart of the moment. "What will my whole life look like?", "What is my life's purpose?" or "Will I ever be happy?" are valuable questions, but they are not bounded enough for horary astrology. For that kind of existential, long-term question a birth chart is the right path: it sketches the broad picture of your personality and life path.
Questions whose answer you already secretly know, or that you ask to "test" someone else, also rarely produce a satisfying result. Horary astrology works best when you are genuinely in the dark and listen to the answer with an open mind.
If you'd like to fully understand the distinction between the two forms, the article horary astrology vs. birth chart will help. In short: for a bounded question of the moment you choose horary astrology, and for self-insight and the broad lines of your life you choose a birth chart. The two are not mutually exclusive either — many people use them side by side.
How is it best to phrase your question?
Take a moment to write your question down before you ask it. Make it as concrete as possible and choose one clear subject. Avoid bundling several matters together ("Will I get the job AND will my relationship stay good AND will I sell my house?") — split those into separate questions instead. A well-phrased question often already contains half of the clarity.
It also helps to wait until the question genuinely weighs on you. A question you ask "just to be sure" or out of pure curiosity, without the answer really mattering to you, lacks that necessary urgency. The most powerful horary questions arise precisely at the moment you can no longer move forward without clarity: a knot you truly want to cut, a choice that is in front of you right now. So feel free to ask your question in plain, everyday language — just as you would put it to a trusted friend.
And importantly: asking the same question over and over because the answer wasn't to your liking doesn't help. The chart of the moment answers the question as you asked it, at that point in time. If you receive an answer that disappoints, that in itself is valuable information. Not sure whether your question fits? In the FAQ you'll find more examples of what to ask and what to avoid, and the introduction what is horary astrology? explains how it all works.
